FAQ
Below you will find the most frequently asked questions and the answers to them.
I hope this will help!
1. I am new to genealogy and
would like to know where to get started in Colorado research?
A. I would suggest that you head
over to the How-To section on the Links page. There
you'll also find many links to great sites for beginners. Also, just as
important, you should post a query on the two message
boards, join the email list and ask
questions about your ancestors there. It has been my experience that the more
places you ask the question, the better your chances of getting an answer. Just
don't expect an answer right away. Your inline-cousin may be off the Web for a
day, or two... or three.
2. My family is from Colorado.
Can you help me find them?
A. The entire COGenWeb is designed
to help you in this task, but we probably won't have the complete, or even a
partial, answer. The most important thing for you to do is know what you are
looking for, and to understand some of the basic tools of genealogical research.
If you're new to genealogy, please refer back to question #1.
3. I am looking for
information about my great-grandparents.
A. Unfortunately, if you don't see
it on the site then I don't have any information about it and I do not do local
research. In this case you might want to try placing a
query on at least one of the two message boards, the
Search Engines page, and the Look Up Assistance
page
4. I don't see XXXX church or
cemetery on your list.
A. If you do not see additional
information, no one has sent that information to me to post.
5. I know my ancestor is buried
in XXXX Cemetery. Why isn't he or she listed in your records?
A. The cemetery transcriptions
only have gravestone listings for stones that were there at the time of the
reading. So cemetery readings from the 1930s, for example, will not have records
of graves placed in the 1960s. We will not be able to add your ancestors
to existing readings. This is not intended to disrespect your relatives or
friends in any way, but to preserve the historical integrity of each cemetery
reading, which has significance in its own right.
6. Can you send me a marriage
license (or birth certificate, death certificate, court document) for my
ancestor?
A. No. In most cases, you will
need to check with the county courthouse in order to obtain original documents.
Since you are viewing this site of unknowns, your best bet would be to place a
query on at least one of the two message boards, and
use the Search Engines page, particularly the
SearchUs engine which will search all of the COGenWeb and perhaps locate your
ancestor. Once done, if you find your ancestor, you can go to the proper
county.
7. Can you look some information
up for me?
A. If it's not on the site then I
don't have the resource. Your best bet would be to ask on the
email lists. There are many people subscribed
and it's possible someone has that resource available. Another place you might
try is the Look Up Assistance page.
8. The pictures are so tiny, I
can't see them.
A. They are "thumbnail" pictures.
Click on the picture for a larger view.
9. How do I submit information
to you?
A. Submit information to me ONLY
if you do not know the Colorado county. If you DO know the county, please go to
the respective county site and email that coordinator. S/he can give you their
guidelines for submissions.
If you submit information to me,
please email me first. With all the worms, viruses, and trojans running around,
I am very hesitant to open attachments. I need to know your email address is a
clean first.
You are welcome to submit as much
material as you like, including photos as long as two stipulations are met: 1.)
The Colorado county is unknown; 2.) The material does not include people still
living.
Photos can be scanned, however,
please do not crop or downsize them. I will do that from this end.
If possible, please have your
material typed and ready for presentation. It will just help me get your
material online a lot more quickly.
10.
How did my family information get on your web site?
A. The main way your family information got on my
web site is through your other family members. Some genealogists that you may
not even know donated their research to this web site. Every section contains
the href and contact information for the person who donated the material.
I am not related to anyone in this area by
blood. The family I married into is not related to any local families
(either by blood or marriage). I cannot provide you with any more
information than what is on this web site already; however, I may be able
to provide you with contact information of other people who are researching your
line.
