1. DR. JOSIAH CAMILLIS MASSIE⁷ (JOSIAH⁶, THOMAS*⁵, EDWARD^*4, MASSEY, THOMAS?^*3, EDWARD^*2, MASSIE¹) was born 1816 in Winchester, Frederick Co, Virginia, and died 1879 in Houston, Harris Co, Texas. He married (1) LOUISA MATILDA DIXON, daughter of DR DIXON and HARRIET DIXON. He married (2) HARRIET (MRS) DIXON 24 Jun 1836 in Copiah Co, Mississippi. She died in Anderson, Grimes Co, TX. He married (3) MESSINIAH ELIZABETH SESSUMs Abt. 1853 in Houston, Harris Co, Texas. She was born Dec 1824 in Lawrence Co, Tennessee, and died in Altus, Oklahoma.

1st Marriage: Harriet Dickson / Dixon, widow of Dr. Dixon. No children. [ Surprisingly, this marriage was recorded in Hinds Co, Mississippi. Later, because 1 thought they married in TEXAS, 1 entered that data. Now, 1 wonder about the time-line of migration. ]

2nd Marriage: Josiah C married the Matilda, the grown daughter of his first wife, who was a Widow when they married. One child.

Josiah C first practiced medicine with the well-known Dr. Dixon in Anderson, Grimes Co, TX. He married the widow, then her daughter. Later, there was a last marriage to Messiniah Elizabeth Massie, mother of the first Joseph Sessums Massie.

Joe S Massie, reports in Dec, 2002, that he has his diploma from medical school in either lndiana or Ohio.

Joe Massie, descendant of Josiah C. wonders if this land transaction is accurate for his ancestor. Its a good bit north of where his Josiah C lived. This may be another Josiah C Massie.

Joe S Massie reports in Nov, 2001:
Dr. Josiah first lived in Anderson, Grimes Co, TX, then Fort Bend Co, then concurrently in
Harris Co. and Galveston. The plantation was in Harris Co. He also owned warehouses and a
home in Galveston.

Joseph Sessums Massie had a plantation near Channelview on Buffalo Bayou across from the present San Jacinto Battlefield Park and the confluence of Carpenters Bayou.

Brig General Paul O Hebert assumed command of the troops of the Texas Coast, Arkansas. Some troops were sent to Tennessee and Virginia, to the Lower Rio Grande, to New Mexico and Arizona. Brig.-Gen. Paul O Hebert appointed several men as officers. He appointed E B Nichols colonel of a six months' infantry regiment at Galveston with Josiah C Massie, Lieutenant-colonel.

Joe Sessums Massie, posted on Genforum he served in the 6th or 9th Texas Infantry. (He has his sword.)

When Josiah C Massie left the plantation on Bufalo Bayou (Houston, Harris Co, TX), he moved, with his 5 children, to Vernon, Wilbarger Co. It was a booming area at the time. The railroad had just gone through and it was becomming prosperous. He had a business and became mayor around 1889. His son Frank Lewis Massie, the 'living' Joe Massie's grandfather, was married in 1904 and living in Vernon during the year 1906.

There was a Massie grave yard on Buffalo Bayou (Houston, TX), which began to erode. The family graves were moved. Joe S Massie, of Maryland, says Josiah C's body was moved to the Masonic Cemetery. Josiah C had been a member of the Holland Masonic Lodge.

Notes for LOUISA MATILDA DIXON:
This was his 2nd marriage. I believe she was grown when he married her mother. After her mother's death, he married her. When she died, she left only one child, a daughter. Source: Joe S Massie in 2001.

Notes for MESSINIAH ELIZABETH SESSUMS:
On one of the Census, her name is Mary E. On another census, her name is Elizabeth. Therefore, 1'm guessing she was called Elizabeth. Who knows why someone gave her name as Mary on the census.

She was a young widow of a man whose last name was Conger.

Her family had roots in Louisiana. For instance, her brother (a Sessums) was Bishop of New Orleans.

James Conger was bom at Montgomery, NY in 1793. Eliza Dob was born in New York City in 1797. They were married at New York City in 1815. Their son, John Peter Conger was born at New York City in 1816. James Conger died at Crabor, Mexico, in 1849. Eliza Dobs Conger married 2) George W Broderick (178:98-1864) at Houston, Texas. Messiniah Elizabeth Sessums was born in Lawrence County, Tennessee, in 1825, the daughter of Blunt Newsum Sessums (d. 1845). John Peter Conger died in 1849 at Houston, Texas. Messiniah Elizabeth Conger married 2) Dr. Josiah Camillus Massie, (b. 1818) in 1851 at Houston Texas. He was a widower with one daughter bom in 1846. Josiah Camillus and Messiniah Elizabeth Massie had two children, 1852-1855." End Quote

The 1900 Census finds her in the home of her son, Joe, in Vernon, Willbarger Co, TX. She is listed as "Mother, born Dec 1824, TN NC VA; Widow."

When her son, Joe S Massie, went to Roswell to investigate Space invaders, she accompanied him. (As did daughter, Grace.) Later, Elizabeth lived with a Grand daughter in Altus, OK. I am not sure if she died in Oklahoma or Texas. (I've added that she died in Ok. since that is the last known residence.)

She married FRANK JABAZ LEWIS in Galveston, TX. He was born 11 Sep 1901, and died Oct 1976 in Washington D.C.

Notes for MATILDA 'MATTIE' MASSIE:
Her birth and death dates come from the SSDI : b. 10 Nov 1913; d. May 1987, Baltimore, Baltimore Co, MD.
Previously, I had 1919 as the date of death. This may be correct, for her father died before 1913.. The Matilda found on the SSDI may be a name sake. (Oddly, the name certainly fits for her husband.) Many questions here.

She had no children according to Joe S Massie in 2001. Though the first report says she died in Washington DC, the SSDI says she died in Baltimore, Baltimore Co, MD.

Joe S Massie has reported this marriage. Frank was reportedly a very wealthy man whose only child died childless.

From census, we see the children were young when their father left the Houston area of Texas for Wilbarger Co, TX.

Seated in northeastem Texas against the Oklahoma border is Wilbarger County. The County was established in 1858 from lands formerly assigned to the Bexar District. Its rolling plains are surfaced by sandy, loam, and waxy soils that support tall grasses, mesquite, and oak trees. Wilbarger is bordered by the Texas counties of Archer, Wichita, Baylor, Foard and Hardeman, and the Oklahoma counties of Jackson and Tillman. Until the 1870s, the area that is now Wilbarger County was part of the buffalo hunting ground of the Wanderers Band of Comanche. The first Great Westem Trail drives came through the county and crossed the Red River near Doan's Crossing.

Notes for MINNIE LEWIS:
[Massie. FTW] I have no information that Minnie was a Lewis. 1 suspect she may have been because her son was named Frank 'Lewis'. The 1880 census gives her name as "Minnie". Then in 1900, she is her son's household as "Mother", and written as Mary Elizabeth.
