Lifelong Olympic Peninsula resident Stanley A. Taylor died in Port Angeles at
age 89. He was born in the Dungeness area of Sequim to pioneers A. N. and Grace
Mary (Ware) Taylor and , at the age of 5, started his formal education at the Jamestown
S'Klallam schoolhouse, where his father was the agent. Stanley was the only
white child present.
In 1927, he was salutatorian for the Sequim High School graduation in 1927. At
age 16, he entered the University of Washington, where he graduated from both
the liberal arts and law schools and was a member of Sigma Phi-Epsilon
fraternity.
Mr. Taylor, a member of the Washington State Bar Association, opened his first
office in Port Angeles in 1934, during the depth of the Great Depression. When
retired, he was an attorney who had practiced in Port Angeles for more than 50
years and served many years as a Municipal Court Judge for Port Angeles. He also
served as attorney for the city of Port Angeles, Forks Hospital and Olympic
Memorial Hospital.
Mr. Taylor was a founding board member of Clallam County YMCA; and served 44
years on the board of trustees of G. M. Lauridsen Foundation, With 33 years as
president. At St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, he served on the vestry as
junior
warden, senior warden and in 1969, recipient Of the Bishop's Cross, the highest
recognition available to a lay person.
Mr. Taylor is a former president of the board of directors of Port Angeles
Savings and Loan and a founding board member of Diversified Industries.
Additionally, he was a charter member and past president of Port Angeles Kiwanis
Club. His hobbies included travel, reading and sports; birthday presents from
his wife have included going parasailing, white water rafting and hot air
ballooning.
On June 14, 1936, Mr. Taylor married Dorothy Brooke in Sequim; she died March
15, 1984. On Jan. 1 1987, he married Millie Hill in Port Angeles. In addition to
his wife, Mr. Taylor's survivors include son S. Brooke Taylor, Step son John
Coffel and step daughter Karen Hennings, all of Port Angeles; daughter Anne
Peterson of Springfield, Ore.; sister Elsie McFarland of Port Angeles; six
grandchildren and six step grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was
preceded in death by brothers Clarence, Jess and Wilfred and sisters Grace
Scidmore and Gladys Hume.
