Moffat County, located in the northwest corner of Colorado, lies midway between Denver, Colorado, and Salt Lake City, Utah.  In land size, the county is the second largest in Colorado.  Its population rate, however, is rather small (13,980 as of 2009) enjoying wide-open spaces and a diverse landscape - from Black Mountain’s golden aspens to rugged canyons. The Ute Indians were the last Native American tribe inhabiting the Yampa Valley before settlers moved into the area in the 1800’s. Earlier tribes left records of their existence with petroglyphs in various sites. Cattle and sheep men carved out their niche, leaving a colorful western history complete with range wars and gunfights.  The Brown's Park area in the northwest part of the county also used to be famous as one of the biggest outlaw hideouts in the old West. 

Named for Colorado tycoon David H. Moffat, the county was created out of the western portion of Routt County on February 27, 1911. The county seat is Craig, the largest town in the county.  Agriculture, ranching, and mining were and still are, a vital part of the local economy; oil, natural gas, coal, and other minerals abound.
