Joy Scholtes
(September 28, 1927 - October 19, 2008)

 
Munising

Joycelyn “Joy” Scholtes, age 81, of N6391 Knox Street, Munising died under the loving care of her family and North Woods Hospice at her home on Sunday morning, October 19, 2008. She was born on September 28, 1927 in Kenmore, New York to the late Henry and Dorothy Loewer. After graduating from high school Joy attended Michigan Normal which is now Eastern Michigan University, where she graduated with a Bachelors Degree in Physical Education. Joy began teaching in Munising in 1950, choosing Munising because it was the only school she could find with an indoor swimming pool. She married Ted Scholtes on June 21, 1951, and together they had three children. Joy taught Physical Education at Munising for thirty and a half years she was also a swimming coach and was awarded coach of the year in 1970-71. She was a member of the GAA (Girls Athletic Association), Lions Club, the Elm Street Players, and the Munising Senior Center where she served as Secretary. She was a charter member of the Lioness Club. Joy was a Worthy Matron for three years of the Eastern Star and served on the Grand Committee for Membership in the Bupp Arnold Family. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at which she was a moderator for the Women Association and was a devoted member of the choir. Joy had a special collection of frogs, nutcrackers, and angels. She also enjoyed quilting/knitting, reading, oil painting, and had a special love for all animals, especially her dogs Sadie and Jay. Joy’s family would like to give a special thanks to Julie Deisenroth for all of her caring help.

Joy is survived by her husband of fifty-seven years – Ted Scholtes of Jacobetti in Marquette; daughter – Linda Scholtes of Munising; son – Henry Scholtes of Manistee, MI; niece – Mary Sue Nolan, and numerous other nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents – Henry and Dorothy; son – Theodore William Scholtes III; and brother Henry Loewer.

Joy’s visitation will be on Thursday, October 23, 2008 at the First Presbyterian Church in Munising at 10:00 a.m. An Eastern Star memorial service will begin at 10:15 a.m. Her funeral will be conducted by Pastor Debra Hubbard beginning at 11:00 a.m. on Thursday. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Joy’s name to Pancreatic Cancer Research or the Alger County Humane Society.
